Mulch Calculator
Work out exactly how much mulch you need for your garden beds. Enter the size below and we will do the maths.
50 to 75mm is typical for beds.
Covers at 7cm deep. Figures are a guide. Buying loose by the cubic metre is usually cheaper than bags for anything over about a trailer load.
Getting your mulch right
Mulch is one of the best things you can do for a Gold Coast garden. It locks moisture into the soil through our hot, dry spells, keeps weeds down, and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Getting the quantity right the first time saves you a second trip to the landscape yard.
As a rule of thumb, aim for 50 to 75mm of depth across your beds. Any shallower and weeds push through; any deeper and you risk holding too much moisture against plant stems. Always keep mulch pulled back a little from trunks and stems.

Mulch questions
How much mulch do I need?
Multiply the bed length by its width to get the area in square metres, then multiply by the mulch depth in metres. For example, a 5m by 2m bed at 7cm deep needs 5 x 2 x 0.07 = 0.7 cubic metres. The calculator above does this for you.
How deep should mulch be?
For most garden beds, 50 to 75mm (5 to 7.5cm) is ideal. That is deep enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering your plants. Keep mulch clear of plant stems and trunks.
Should I buy mulch in bags or by the cubic metre?
For a small area, bags are convenient. For anything over roughly a trailer load, buying loose by the cubic metre is almost always cheaper. The calculator shows both so you can compare.
